David,
In the 1870 Ohio Co. census book, transcribed by Robert McManaway,
on page 133, from microfilm page 468, the family of Peter and Margaret
Shown #61,includes eight children. One of them is Mary H. age 16. Family#
62 is that of David 51 and Catherine Westerfield 50 and their sixchildren,
including Alexander, age 14. His age fits, since he became 15 after census
day (June 1), but either they wanted to make the census taker think that
they were the same age, or her age was wrong in 1870.
Catherine Ralph married, first, William Sutton in 1833. Either the
bond or marriage date (perhaps both) was on Oct 29. The bondsman was
William C. Leach. The ceremony was performed by William Hart. If
Catherine's age is correct in the census, she would have been ca. 13 when
she married. That would not have been uncommon in that day.
In the 1830 Ohio Co., KY census, on page 251 there were two Ralph
families, John and William. These were the only Ralph heads of families.
They are listed together. Next is Moses Fuqua, then after him is Cornelius
Westerfield. Of course the 1830 doesn't give the names of people otherthan
heads of families.
These age brackets were: under 5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40 and40-50
John Ralph had 1-2-1-0-0-1 males and 0-1-1-0-0-1 females
William Ralph had 1-1-0-0-0-0-1 males snd 2-0-0-0-0-1 females
Cornelius Westerfield had 0-0-0-0-1 male and 0-0-0-0-2 females
[This was Cornelius, jr. Cornelius, sr. was back in Mercer Co. in the 1830
census. I would guess that he had gone back to tend to the affairs of his
mother after his father's death in 1826.]
Of course Catherine could have been living with some other family,
but she would have been about 10 years old. Two big ifs: if she livingwith
her parents , and if the column markings are correct, then, she must have
been a daughter of John, but that is purely speculation.
I don't know any more about Catherine Ralph Sutton Westerfield's
parents. It is possible that there might be an Ohio Co. Equity suit which
would indicate who her parents were, but I haven't checked Ralph suits. I
haven't read all of the Westerfield and Moseley suits, yet.
Did you know that the second annual national Westerfield reunion is
being held Oct 14-15 at Harrodsburg, KY?
I copied this from your page on Elizabeth Moseley Westerfield. This
is my 2-great-grandmother. I know that she died when my great-grandfather,
Charles Franklin Westerfield was about two years old, somethime between
the 1850 census and David's second marriage to Catherine Ralph Sutton. He
told Daddy that many times. We have never been able to discover the actual
date. According to the 1850 census, she was born ca. 1819, the same years
as David. In searching since the 1950's, neither have I never been able to
discover her date of birth. Did the references that you have below tell
where they got that information? Maybe it was another Elizabeth Moseley.
Elizabeth Westerfield, sister of David, who married William Nelson, was
born in June 1, 1817 and died in Nov 2, 1882, according to her tombstone.
Maybe the year was confused with her record.
The death dates below seem to have been mixed with that which is
listed for her husband, *David*, on his tombstone at Mt. Hermon Methodist
church. However, his tombstone was *wrong*. We have found his obituary in
three different newspapers, two in Ohio Co. and the Owensboro Messenger,
and a Bible listing for his death. He died either Sept. 1 or 2, 1905. (My
guess is that the died during the night, so it could have been either
date.)
#7, below, Ida Bell/e was a daughter of David and his second wife,
Catherine Ann (Ralph) Sutton, not of Elizabeth.
Here is the family in the 1860 Ohio co. Census.
346-346
WESTERFIELD, David SR. 41 MW FARMER 2000 3330
WESTERFIELD, Catherine A. 40 FW
WESTERFIELD, Charles F. 12 MW
WESTERFIELD, William D. 7 MW
WESTERFIELD, Commodore H. 5 MW
WESTERFIELD, Alexander L. 4 MW
WESTERFIELD, Isaac K. 3 MW
WESTERFIELD, George W. 1 MW (Apparently, George died young.)
Then, in the 1870 census George W. was missing, Ida B. was 9 and
John Morgan was 7.
I believe it is likely that the one who gave the death cert. info.
on Zerilda Josephine as Grayson Co. might have been confused.h
