Private in Company E, 149th Indiana Volunteer Infantry
The regiment was organized at Indianapolis and mustered in March 1, 1865. He left Indiana for Nashville, TN March 3 thence moved to Decatur, ALA and garrison guard duty there until September. His regiment received the surrender of Generals Roddy and Warren. The regiment lost 43 men to disease during service. Samuel's date of muster into the 149th was Feb 16, 1865, mustered out Aug 15, 1865. He died just 15 days later, walking home from the war, just short of his own house.
