Mariah raised her three grandsons after the death of her husband, daughter Elizabeth, and son-in-law Ivin Ruble. Per a letter from Gertrude Ruble Biddle, a tree fell on Mariah's leg while she was logging and it had to be amputated below the hip. She had a wooden leg after that.
