Governor of Vermont 1853-1854 Selected by Legislature when Robinson as Democratic nominee, Erastus Fairbanks as Whig and a Free Soil candidate both failed to receive Constitutionally required 50 percent of popular vote. Last Democrat Governor until 1960. Delegate, Democratic national convention, 1860. Died while attending the convention. Death attributed to apoplexy.
