CO. B. 59th Ind. Vol. Inf. From Oct. 1861 to 1 Jan. 1863 under his own name and then Co. I 16th Ill. Vol. Cal. From 4 Jun. 1863 to 19 Jun. 1865 under the name of WM. H. McBride. He was captured at Jonesville, Va. 3 Jun. 1864. Held at Richmond, Va. Until 13 Jan. 1864 paroled at Charleston, S.C. on 6 Dec. 1864 later at Benton Barrack, Mo. and Camp Chase.
One of several Union men who tunneled out of Andersonville on the plea of digging a well and one dark night pushed up through the hole and escaped. The alarm was immediately sounded and the country scoured for the fugitives. McKee was recaptured three days after his escape. He received an honorable discharge in Aug. 1865
