Notes for: Henry BEAUFORT
Roman Catholic Priest and one of the five illegitimate children of John of Gaunt, the third son of King Edward III. When his parents were married, he was declared legitimate by Pope Boniface IX and legitimated by Act of Parliament on February 9, 1397
After being Bishop of Lincoln, he was appointed the Bishop Winchester in 1405. He held the position of Lord Chancellor of England
Pope Martin V appointed him as Cardinal in 1425, and in 1426, he was made Papal Legate of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia
He attempted unsuccessfully to negotiate an end to the Hundred Years War between England and France. In 1443, he retired from politics, and in 1444 a truce was made between England and France, thus his policy was at last successful
