Notes for: Helen Lee FULLER
Helen Fuller was born February 12, 1911 in Almyra, Arkansas. She attended High School in Almyra, Arkansas. Helen was a fearless young woman. One afternoon she watched a bi-wing plane land in a field next to their house. She went out and asked pilot if he would take her for a ride. The pilot flew her around Almyra. This was in about 1927 during early unproven years of flying. After high school, she attended Arkansas State Teachers' College (Now U.C.A.) in Conway, Ar. Helen taught in Alread, AR., 20 miles west of Clinton on Hwy. 16, after her third year at ASTC College for one year . She then took a job at a one room school house 1/4 mile south of the U. of A. rice experiment station between Stuttgart, Ar. and Almyra. She taught 4 years there. Next, she went to Yoder, west of Almyra, and taught 3 1/2 years. On the way to work she would stop and shoot turtles when crossing some marshy lowlands. About 1939, Glenn Fuller, her brother called her and asked her to move to Brinkley where she began keeping the books at the Easy Pay Tire Store. In 1941, she married J. C. Fowler in Stuttgart. They were members of First Baptist Church in Brinkley. They bought the farm north of Moro, Arkansas that year, for which she also kept the books. A.W. Fuller helped them find a prairie soil just like the Almyra, Arkansas area which was good for rice farming. Then about 1949 she kept books for A.W. Fuller's rent building on Main St. in Brinkley. In 1955 she and J.C. were partners with Glenn and A.W. in building the Mimosa Motel on S. Hwy. 70 in Brinkley, Arkansas. The motel was then leased to the Rusher family from 1955 to 1965. In 1965, it was taken back and named Fuller Motel. When Interstate 40 came through Brinkley, Ar. in 1967, Helen and her brother Glenn Fuller built the Fuller's Best Western was built on I-40. Helen was the manager until 1969. On March 13, 1970, Helen married Herbert Joyner. During the next years and up until 1995, she also kept the books for A.W. Fuller Est. Farms and Fuller Bros. Farm at Almyra, AR., and Cousins Farm south of Brinkley, and her on farm at Moro, Ar., and Fowler Rentals. Helen died on September 27, 2001. Helen and J.C. Fowler, who died iApril 4, 1962, had 3 children Fran Fowler Duke, James Warner, who died shorty after birth, and Steve. Steve and Rhonda Fowler had 3 children, Jason, Ryan, and Catherine.
