Notes for: Ebenezer GARDNER

Ebenezer Gardner was born in that part of Salem that is now West Peabody. A potter by trade, he received a grant of land at Auk-paque, Cumberland, Nova Scottia, prior to the Rev War. This was land from which the Acadians had been expelled. Since he sided with the Americans and went to Boston to speak for their cause, when the Rev War broke out he came back to Maine and settled on the west bank of the Machias River. He was a private in Capt. Stephen Smith's company, Col. Benjamin Foster's regiment, and also in Lt. John Scott's detachment, 6th Lincoln Co Regt. For his patriotic services, he received in 1785 a grant of 1,000 acres near Bangor, but he preferred to remain at Machias
