Born and christened Carl Ludwig Schilling
Arrived in North America in a ship full of German soldiers bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the spring and summer of 1782, and then directed to Castine, ME to defend Fort George Penobscot from the American rebels.
He deserted on 26 October 1782 and made his way up the Penobscot River, where he was protected from being captured by Charles Blagdon, Hannah Blagdon's father, who lived in Orrington. Changed his name to Lewis Skillings and married Hannah Blagdon
