Notes for: Henry David KEMP

From the "History of Dubois County" Indiana:

On August 5, 1845, Henry and Sarah, his wife, donated to "All persons while inhabitants of school district number five" one acre of ground in section 32 near Mt. Zion in Cass Twp.. The deed stipulated that this included "The Sabbath Seminary".

Henry Kemp was one of two men who could equal Jonathon Walker in a fight, Walker was a large robust pugilistic fellow who could attract attention in any crowd on account of his physical vigor. His fighting abilities were of the highest order. He was feared from one end of Buffalo Trace to the other.

The Kemp men were generally over 6ft. tall and their weight ran from 225 to 275 lbs. All took pride in their manhood.

One of the preaching places in the neighborhood of Mt. Zion and Mt. Vernon was Henry Kemp's place. There was no church structure in the neighborhood. The log house on the farm of Henry Kemp was used as a meetinghouse by both the United Brethren Church and The Methodist.
