Notes for: George CRAIG
Switzerland County histories say that at first he was living in Kentucky, but tending large orchards on the Indiana side of the Ohio. When asked why, he replied, "so that my grandchildren will have plenty to eat." During an Indian scare he built a blockhouse on the Indiana side, and later moved there. They also say that George came to Indiana in 1809, and that he served in the War of 1812. He was living in Frankfort in 1805, when he married his first wife, Elizabeth Morton "of Clark County." George became a prominent Switzerland County citizen. He organized the county's first Baptist Church, at John Cotton's house on Indian Creek, and became its first preacher, being "fully ordained." He held local offices: Justice of the Peace, County Commissioner, and an election official. It is recorded that he recommended a "mobile prison" be built, for prison laborers. From 1822 to 1825 he served in the Indiana State Senate.
