Notes for: Clinton SHOCKEY

The body of Clinton Shockey was found Saturday in his farm home 35 miles northwest of Joplin. The body was found by Royal Wolery, a neighbor. Wolery had been notified by rural mail carrier, Hank Wolf, that Shockey had not picked up his mail for several days. Mr. Wolery investigated and found the body in the house. Coroner Dodds Keith was notified and an investigation was made. As a suicide note was found, there will be no inquest. The cause of death was from an automatic pistol. A towel had been placed over the face, the shot passing completely through the head. From the note that was left, authorities believe Shockey was suffering from a mental condition. He had recently been notified of a slight mistake in his income tax report, and although the matter had been taken care of, authorities believe Shockey, in his condition, had lived in fear of investigation.
Shockey was an overseas veteran of World War I and served in three major engagements in France. He was discharged April 29, 1919 and has lived in this county since that time. He was a member of the local posts of the V. F. W. and American Legion.
