Notes for: Samuel Alexander SKOMP

Samuel Skomp was less than 1 year old when his father, John Skomp, died. His mother remarried but died when he was 8 years old. When he was 12 years old. he went under the guardianship of Henry S. Slinkard along with his sister Susannah Skomp (Wilson). The guardianship lasted from May 1856 to May 1867 when he filed his final report. Samuel Skomp joined the Indiana Volunteers Company K 80th Infantry in 1862. He was 17 years old when he joined. Samuel Skomp fought in the Civil War in the battles of Resaca, Nashville and Fort Andersonville. He became very deaf from the cannon fire. He told of not having blankets so everyone laid right next to each other. When one wanted to roll over, everyone had to roll. If he did not roll, He was passed out to the side.
