Notes for: Joseph JACKSON Sr.

Joseph, while born in Morganton, was soon moved by his family, to Guilford County, North Carolina, where he is listed by the Sons of the American Revolution as a Patriot of North Carolina in their Graves Register.

After the revolutionary war, in 1787, he married Sarah Kirkman, a native of Guilford County, whose parents, Peter and Eleanor Kirkman had lived there all their lives. After a move to Putnam Co., Indiana, Sarah, after having given Joseph 10 children, died in 1811 and was returned by her husband to be buried in Guilford County. Joseph, now a widower, picked up stakes and moved to Putnam County, Indiana, where he claimed land from the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 that had been set aside for settlers.

In the fall of 1826, after Joseph Jr. had been married, he packed up his family and went to Jacksonville, Morgan County, Ilinois. On the 10th of November, 1826, he claimed two eighth sections of land (160 acres) which he lived on until his death in 1842. He also married again. First to Ann Evans on 10th of March, 1830 and two years later to Malinda Elledge on the 18th of November,1832 with whom he lived until he died on Sept.,24,1842 and was buried in the Jacksonville East Cemetery.
