Notes for: Stephen MCFADIN

Stephen McFadin is documented as a son of John McFadin who died in Tryon Co., NC, in 1776.

Stephen, however, appears to have been unmarried and deceased by 1783 when his brothers were formally relinquishing their own claims to the property estate of their father, thereby recognizing that it would belongonly to sons Alexander and Stephen under the will. Such a document, executed by his brother William, named both John (the father) and Stephen (this son) as "deceased." However, a much later historical/genealogical abstract of this data mistakenly cited the deceased father by the name of John Stephen McFadin thus creating both a mystery as to the later whereabouts of Stephen and a new middle name for his father. It is because of that mistake that we now know the father as John McFadin. The McFadden Family 1700-1998: A Biographical Account of John McFadden and his Descendants written and compiled by Edna R. McFadden Otto, published by Lennis McFadden (1998) "provides a full story of the mistake including a clear and close-up photographic copy of the document containing the error."

No explanation or reason for the death of Stephen has yet been uncovered." [email from David McFadden]
