Notes for: James C HENDERSHOT

James Hendershot is considered the founder of the Owen County branch of Hendershots. James Hendershot came to Owen County after his 24th birthday, Feb. 23, 1847 and began farming in Morgan Township, 3 miles SW of present-day Cuba, IN. In the fall, he went back to Belmont County (Armstrongs Mills), Ohio and married Malinda Stukey at the home of Uncle Nicholas and Aunt Nancy Brewer (sister to his mother, Mary Brewer) Massie. (Nicholas and Nancy Brewer Massie were later immigrants to the ex-Belmont County, OH settlement strung up Fish Creek from Vandalia to Atkinsonville).
James and Malinda floated down the Ohio River from Wheeling, West Virginia, to New Albany, IN, then walked 124 miles to their new home. James was a stock farmer, church builder, and constant reader.
